‘Full-blown’ inquiry on entry of Chinese vessels in Consuji’s mining pit amid COVID lockdown -Legarda

The Chinese are here again unannounced?

House Deputy Speaker Loren Legarda would like to have a full blown inquiry on the issue of the of Chinese cargo vessels in Semirara Island in Antique despite the existing enhance community quarantine (ECQ) policy in the province due to the novel coronavirus 2019 pandemic.

Reports irked Legarda when she was told that Semirara Mining and Power Corporation of the Consunji family continued to operate their open pit mine in Semirara Island and even allegedly exported coal to Chinese cargo vessels while the entire Antique is placed under enhanced community quarantine.

“I want a full-blown investigation into semirara coal mining, the entry of Chinese vessels, previous deaths caused by unsafe mine operations, possible violations of health protocols during covid, transparency in using national wealth funds,” said Legarda, representative of Antique’s lone congressional district.

Legarda stressed that Antique should be on full lockdown and no mining activities should be done, if there is this is a direct violation of the ECQ guidelines.

“The Ssemirara issue, possible alleged violations in health requirements, must be solved now. COVID cannot be spread unabated due to lack of rules or uncaring authorities. This goes beyond politics,” said Legarda.

Legarda said the Chinese cargo vessels first arrived in Antique last April 17 to pick-up coal products from Consunji’s mining pit and left the following day.

The Antique solon, calls out Consunji firm, saying the export of coal to China is not essential, because of the current health crisis.

“Why the need for Chinese vessels? This important question begs for an answer. The welfare of my people is paramount,” said Legarda.
