DILG Chief warns COVID-19 threat continues if Lockdown is lifted early

The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG)Secretary Eduardo Año has warned that all the efforts of the government will be for naught in stopping the spreading of the novel coronavirus 2019 or disease or COVID-19 if the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) if its lifted early.
”If you lifted the lockdown early, our gains would be wasted. We have to sustain the gains. Otherwise, there will be a relapse, a second round, which we might find it hard to contain,” Año said.

“We may find it hard to contain the surge because we have not yet reached the surge of the coronavirus curve. We stopped it because of the lockdown,” he added.

Año said the government needs to prepare for  health care facilities
hospital beds, and ventilators in case of a surge of coronavirus cases.

The government is projecting that hospitals should be prepared to admit 2,000 to 5,000 patients during the COVID-19 pandemic, the DILG Sec said.

Drilon and Gatchilian’s 2 week proposal

Two senators already made their opinion for another two weeks extension of the enhanced community quarantine, they say it is only now the government getting the numbers which would be the basis for future policies to be crafted upon.
“We have sacrificed so much to prevent a further spread of the COVID-19 and a total collapse of our health system. It will be a total waste if we lift prematurely the enhanced community quarantine,” Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon said in a statement.

“We are only beginning to see the data. I see some data that shows it is effective, but it is too early to tell. An extra two weeks would help,” the senator adds.

For Senator Gatchalian’s part:

“With the announcement of the Chief Implementer, Gen. (Carlito) Galvez, that mass testing can only be conducted on April 14, which is still 11 days from now, we are left with no other choice but to extend the ECQ by at least two weeks,” he said in a message to reporters.

“Mass testing of PUMs (persons under monitoring) and PUIs (persons under investigation) is the only way to determine if we are winning the war or not. Without mass testing, we are totally blind. And when we are blind, the risk is higher of spreading the virus again, thereby wasting the 30-day EQC,” he added.
