The country’s oldest ally has been reaching out to the
Philippine government after President Rodrigo Roa Duterte formally sent the
notice to the United States of America (USA) of its intention to terminate the
Visiting Forces Agreement(VFA).
The President in Malacanang before the newly-appointed
government officials said he met with US Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim
and discussed the bilateral relations of the Philippines with the US.
“I apologize for being late. First I was talking to the
former ambassador who is now assigned in Indonesia. Kim, I forgot his name
again. We are talking about the Philippines-US relationship then I was donning
the ranks of the military,” the President said.

“Sinabi ko kay ambassador, itong ruckus na dumating, it came to a fore ‘yung alitan ko sa kanila. Tinanggal ko ‘yung VFA, sila naman ang lapit nang lapit,” he added.
Duterte defended his administration’s war on illegal drugs,
which has drawn an international condemnation.
Just recently some senators in the US demanded the release of
detained opposition senator Leila De Lima for what they described the latter as
a victim of “political persecution” by the current administration and call such
an act as a human right violation.
