“The Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA)
is both a national security policy and a foreign policy. Admittedly, like most

“I am calling on the AFP leaders to
appeal to their commander in chief to stop the whimsical, reckless and very
damaging abrogation of the VFA,” he said.
Trillanes presented six “direct and indirect benefits” of the VFA to the
country, including keeping the Armed Forces of the Philippines abreast on the
latest developments in modern warfare.
He said the VFA allows Filipino and
American troops to hold interoperability exercises that are essential to future
joint operations. “It also fosters goodwill and camaraderie among the Ph-US
soldiers,” he said.
The former said the AFP also receives
modern equipment and training as well critical intelligence from their US
counterparts “that greatly helps in our counter terrorism operations.”
“It not only projects power at the
regional level but also cements the long history of alliance and partnership
between Ph and US,” he said.
He also said the advantage of having the VFA in times of human
assistance/disaster relief where highly efficient operations can be conducted
by the US in times of calamities.
