Poe’s panel to start discussing ABS-CBN franchise renewal

The committee on public services of the Senate chaired by senator Grace Poe will start the hearing of the franchise renewal of ABS-CBN even if the House of Representatives have not scheduled in the near future the pending bills which calls for the franchise renewal of the media outfit.

“Actually, alam mo (you know), nagpalit na yung isip ko e (I already changed my mind). Sa tingin ko, didinigin na natin mismo ang prangkisa (I think, we will hear on the franchise itself),” Poe said.

The senator earlier filed a resolution, which seeks to look into “the operations of ABS-CBN Corporation to determine compliance with the terms and conditions of its franchise under Republic Act No. 7966.”

“Alam naman natin na pagdating sa mga ibang bagay, lalo na pag ito’y kailangan nang maipasa, katulad ng budget, ng buwis, simultaneous naman ang pagdinig, sa House at sa Senado kahit na wala pang nata-transmit na bill ang Kongreso, naghi-hearing na tayo dito,” she went on.

(We all know that when it comes to other things, especially if this needs to be passed already, like the budget, taxes, simultaneous hearings were conducted, in the House and in the Senate even if there’s yet a transmittal from Congress we are already conducting a hearing here).

“Basta lamang hindi pa magsususmite ang aming committee ng isang committee report hanggan’t hindi pa namin natatanggap yung galing sa Kongreso na version nila ng bill,” she added.

(Our committee will not submit a committee report on the issue until we have not yet received the House’s version of the bill).

The senator explained and clarified that her decision to start the franchise renewal is in no way to put pressure on the lawmakers of the House of Representatives.

“My intention is not to pressure them to do anything that is against their will because that’s their right,” she said.
