Nothing wrong with Philippine’s VFA termination - China

China has spoken regarding the abrogation of the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) of the Philippines and the United States of America.

China supports the desire of the Philippines to develop relations with other countries in pursuit of its “Independent Foreign Policy” and doused the fears that China would be more aggressive in its maritime expansion in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said at a press briefing the Philippines has the “right to uphold an independent foreign policy.

China also gave its comment regarding the criticisms the Philippines is getting that the abrogation is a wrong move in view of the security concerns and tensions over territorial disputes with regard the West Philippine Sea, saying that room for regional cooperation should not be overlooked.

“It is also China’s belief that exchange and cooperation between countries should not only benefit those involved, but also advance regional and global peace and stability,” said Geng.

“As to how the decision will affect the situation in the South China Sea, I want to point out that currently, with the concerted efforts of China and ASEAN countries, the situation in the South China Sea has been basically stable,” Geng said.

“China and ASEAN countries are committed to full and effective implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC). In the meantime, we have been advancing consultations on a code of conduct (COC),” he added.
