‘for right reasons’, Di lang kay Bato! VP Robredo says re VFA, EDCA possible termination review

Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo has finally gone public and has given her 2 cents regarding the pronouncement of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte regarding his decision to terminate the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) with the United States after the US visa of senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa has been cancelled.

Robredo said the review of such defense agreements with the United States should be done “for the right reasons” and not just because the President feels it should be done on the premise that the US Visa of senator Bato was cancelled.
“Hindi dapat siya ginagamit bilang panakot, hindi siya dapat ginagamit bilang leverage kasi iyong isyu mas malaki pa kaysa sa US visa ng isang tao,” Robredo added.

During her weekly radio show, the Vice president said the review should be done for the agreements like the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) and EDCA (Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement)—both implemented under the Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) with the US—  if it is still beneficial to the national security of the country.

“Unang-una, bakit ba tayo pumasok sa Mutual Defense Treaty? Bakit ba tayo pumasok sa Visiting Forces Agreement? Bakit ba tayo pumasok sa EDCA? Ito, pumasok tayo kasi may nakita tayong benefit sa atin. So dapat, iyon iyong basis ng review: tinitingnan natin kung beneficial pa ba,” she said.
“Pero kung gagamitin natin dahil gusto nating mag-get back dahil sa pagkansela ng visa, tingin ko mali iyon kasi sinasakripisyo mo iyong buong bansa para sa mas personal na alitan.”

The Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Justice has begun their respective reviews as per the instruction of Pres. Duterte.
