PH Navy to acquire 2 anti-submarine helis for future corvettes

The Philippine Navy is not slowing down with its planned modernization of its assets, it knows it has a lot of miles to go before it can be called a credible navy so its going full steam ahead with its planned upgrades.

The Philippine Navy is eyeing to add another 2 more anti-submarine warfare helicopters which will be matched with the two new corvettes under the Second Horizon of Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Modernization Program, this according to Philippine Navy chief Vice Admiral Robert Empedrad.

“We will also be acquiring two additional anti-submarine warfare helicopters to provide extended range patrol for the two corvettes that we will be acquiring in the future,” Vice Admiral Empedrad said as quoted by Inquirer.net during the decommissioning ceremony of Navy’s “legacy” assets on January 29.

“‘Yong corvette may provision ‘yon na need ng anti-submarine warfare helicopter. So sinama namin sa Horizon 2, we will program that. Pagdating ng corvette may kasama din na AW159 every time that she goes on patrol,” he said.
PN already put into service last year, the initial batch of 2 brand new Leonardo AW159 Lynx Wildcat helicopters worth P5.4 billion. It will complement the two missile-capable frigates built in South Korea set for delivery this year.
