The
ongoing political flexing between the Philippines and the United States of
America because of detained opposition senator Leila De Lima continues, with
the former adding another US senator on the list of being banned for entry in
the Philippines.
The
President through Presidential spokesperson Atty. Salvador Panelo banned Senator
Edward Markey of Massachusetts for calling for the immediate release of Sen.
Leila de Lima, and for supporting the entry ban to the US of Duterte government
officials believed to have had a hand in her detention.
“Yes, same reason for banning Durbin and Leahy. Truth to tell we do not have to state any ground to ban a foreign national entry in the Philippines. That is an exercise of sovereign right,” Panelo said.

some key Duterte administration officials that they claim had a hand in the
wrongful detention of the lady senator.
It
may be recalled that Liberal Party opposition senator Leila De Lima has been
detained in Camp Crame Detention Center since 2017 for drug charges.
If
the US would enforce the said ban, Atty. Panelo said the country would require
all Americans to secure visas before entering the country.
