The dream of the
Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to have its own supersonic cruise
missiles for its coastal defense is nearing its completion.
This after the
Department of National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said that the AFP has
the necessary budget for its acquisition.
"There is
money for it as per our modernization program," the defense chief said.
The Philippine
Army is eyeing the acquisition of medium-range ramjet supersonic, which was
jointly developed by Russia and India. BrahMos cruise missiles, for coastal

Under the
Horizon 2 of the Modernization Program of the Armed Forces of the Philippines,
one of its priority for acquisition is a land based missile system for the
country. Horizon 2 is slated for 2018 to 2022 and geared for the acquisition of
equipment geared for external defense with a budget of PHP300 billion.
As per the
Defense Secretary, the Philippine Army is currently evaluating BraHmos.
"The Army
is looking at it," he added.
It may be
recalled last October,the PA activated its first land-based missile battery
system which is under the supervision of the Army Artillery Regiment. The unit
is currently working on its training programs before acquiring its future
equipment.
The BraHmos
cruise missiles can be launched from ship, aircraft, submarine or land and has
a top of Mach 3 and capable of carrying warheads weighing 200 to 300 kilograms.
“The Philippine
Army is interested in acquiring this type of missile as it will strengthen our
coastal defense operations,” PA spokesperson said earlier.
