PH can't complain vs US ban on officials re De Lima detention: ex- SC justice Carpio

Retired Supreme Court Justice Antonio Carpio came out of retirement and said that the move of the United States of America (USA) is valid and legal in banning all those government officials who have one thing or another a hand in the detention of opposition senator Leila De Lima.

The prohibition, contained in the Washington’s new budget signed by US President Donald Trump is the power the State Secretary to ban Philippine government officials which have involvement in the “illegal” detention of opposition senator Leila De Lima.

A provision of the US 2020 budget indicated that:

The Secretary of State shall apply subsection (c) to foreign government officials about whom the Secretary has credible information (sic.) have been involved in the wrongful imprisonment of: [...] Senator Leila de Lima who was arrested in the Philippines in 2017.

“That's the right of every state so if the US Congress, for whatever reason, decides to bar certain individuals or aliens from entering their country, that's their right. Nobody can complain,” Carpio told ABS-CBN News.
“We can also bar anyone who is not a Filipino from entering our country and nobody can complain. So that's the principle in international law.”
