Detained opposition senator Leila De Lima was granted by two
judges to have a furlough to visit her ailing mother in the province.
De Lima was granted a 48-hour pass, was
allowed to leave her detention cell from Aug. 14 to 15, but she should be back
in Camp Crame in Quezon city on or before Aug. 16, according to separate orders
from the Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branches 205 and 256.
Branch
205 Judge Liezel Aquiatan and Branch 256 Judge Gener Gito granted Senator De
Lima’s request on humanitarian grounds.
De
Lima cannot give media interviews while visiting her ailing 86-year-old mother,
Norma Magistrado De Lima, in Iriga City, Aquiatan said. The senator will only
be allowed to stay at the hospital for not more than 8 hours, RTC Order added.
In a letter last Friday, Senator Leila De Lima appealed for
prayers as her mother's health had deteriorated.
As per court records, Senator De Lima was also allowed to vote last May and
attend the thanksgiving dinner of her son, Vincent Joshua de Lima Bohol, who
passed the Bar last June. It, however, rejected the lawmaker's request to attend her son’s graduation
from law school in 2018.
She has been detained for more than 2 years for drug related
charges, up to this day she calls an oppression of the Duterte administration
being one of its fiercest critic
