The Philippines is dead serious in considering to add a submarine
in its naval inventory.
This after Defense Secretary Delfin
Lorenzana admits that the Philippine
Navy is looking closely the French made Scorpene diesel-electric powered
submarine, made by French defense contractor Naval Group (formerly DCNS), as
one of the possible submersible platforms for its submarine arm.
"Yes, the Scorpene is one of the platforms being evaluated by
the PN," Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana told the Philippine News
Agency (PNA).

The defense secretary is scheduled to visit five European countries –Portugal,
But one of the highlight of the visit is checking the diesel
powerd Scorpene class of submarines when they reach France.
The Scorpene-class submarine features a diesel and an additional
air-independent propulsion. The vessel can be armed with a variety of mines,
torpedoes and missiles for a variety of missions. It also has a top speed of 20
knots.
Lorenzana is eyeing a government to government procurement scheme whenever
the Philippines decides to pursue its Philippine Navy submarine acquisition program.
The Defense Secretary will also look into the other submarine proposals
of other countries namely those made from - Russia, South Korea, and Germany for
the submarine acquisition program.
