Impeaching Duterte 'not a crime' - Liberal Party's Kiko Pangilinan

Liberal Party President Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan just made a rebuke of the statement made by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte regarding his threat to jail those personalities who would file an impeachment case against him.

The opposition senator said that "impeaching a President is not a crime."

The President made a statement that he will send to jail those who would file an impeachment complaint against him over his recent pronouncements on the hit-and-run incident involving Chinese and Filipino fishermen in Recto Bank in the West Philippine Sea(WPS).

As for the former foreign affairs secretary, Albert del Rosario said that he is “deeply saddened” by the threats given by President Duterte, that all critics of his actions with respect to the Recto incident or to the West Philippine Sea in general will face jail time.

This is the opportunity that the opposition lawmakers may use in considering filing an impeachment complaint against President Duterte after he welcomed the idea of Chinese fishermen fishing in the Philippines' exclusive economic zone (EEZ), where Manila has exclusive rights to resources, based on a 2016 ruling of a United Nations-backed court.
Presidential spokesperson, Salvador Panelo, also said the government would "tolerate" China's fishermen in the Philippines’ EEZ.

Opposition and critics alike, say Duterte and his officials' pronouncements on the maritime dispute could be used as bases for an impeachment complaint against the President.
