PH Army receives mortars and assault rifles from the US

A few days has passed since the 1 day visit by the  US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
A lot of topics has been covered with his visit, topics such as free press, President Duterte’s war on illegal drugs, the Mutual Defense Treaty- particularly pertaining to the South China Sea situation, and the Armed Forces of the Philippines among others were discussed.
Pompeo even made a statement that his President Donald Trump has similarities with our very own President Rodrigo Duterte.

But, the most significant takeaway we can get form the 1 day visit is the commitment of the US to the Philippines as a Mutual Defense Treaty ally.
“As South China Sea is part of the Pacific, any armed attack on the Philippine forces, aircraft or public vessels in the South China Sea, will trigger mutual defense obligations under the mutual defense treaty,” Pompeo said.

Military Assistance

The Philippine Army  over the weekend recently was the recipient of some 44 mortars through the United States of America’s military assistance program.
Army spokesperson, Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala in a statement confirms the turn over of the mortars and also said that the Philippine Army was alo thankful for the 80 assault rifles that also provided through the same military assistance program.
"The PA expresses its gratitude to the US government in granting the assault rifles that will greatly improve the fighting skills of our frontline troops," Zagala said.
