Atienza urges Duterte to crack whip on Manila Water, Maynilad on water treatment facilities re Manila Bay clean up

Former Manila City Mayor and current Buhay Partylist representative Lito Atienza urged President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to head his call.

Atienza, who is also the Senior Deputy Minority in the House of Representatives warns Duterte that all his efforts to rehabilitate Manila bay will be for naught unless he will order giant water distribution companies to fully comply with its obligation in putting up sewerage treatment plants.

Pollution will continue to spill in the bay unless the two giant water conglomerates namely Manila Water Company and Maynilad Water Services Inc. will be ordered to comply with its contractual obligation in the full implementation of the Metro Manila Sewerage Treatment System.

“Mr. President you will fail unless you force the two water concessionaires today to deliver the waste water treatment facilities that is part of their obligation under their contracts,” said Atienza.

Atienza explains, if the sewerage treatment plants are created as expected, we can rest be assured that  sewage thrown into Manila Bay less of toxins and other dangerous pollutants.

The pro-life representative, who previously served secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) during the Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo Administration, disclosed that as part of their contractual obligations under the concessionaires’ agreement with government, the Ayala-owned Manila Water and the Manny Pangilinan-led Maynilad are tasked to put up sewage treatment plants in their respective service areas responsibilities.
