DOST rolls out its brand new hybrid electric road train in Cauayan City

Another first, another must.

Under the administration of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) introduced to the public a technology that is done by Filipinos – the Hybrid Electric Road Train (HERT) designed and fabricated by agency’s Metals Industry Research and Development Center.

DOST Secretary Fortunato Dela Pena led the presentation and turn over of the HERT to the city government of Cauayan in a ceremony held in Cauayan City, Isabela last January 25.

HERT is a road train composed of four air-conditioned interlinked cabins, which can accommodate a total of 40 passengers each, for a maximum of 200 passengers per trip.

The DOST Secretary said the road train is among those vehicles picked by the experts to be at the forefront of mass transport in the coming years. He adds with larger passenger capacity of the hybrid road train, it will be able to transport more number of commuters especially during rush hours.

“This HERT, unlike the conventional railway systems, is more energy efficient since there is no need for alternating current running through suspended cables,” Dela Pena said.

Dela Pena is very much optimistic to see them  in the street the moment all of them are fully commercialized, DOST is tasked to bring innovations to the trains for public convenience.

"Hopefully, this will create an awareness and acceptance among the commuters and locals that our technology exists", DOST-MIRDC Executive Director Robert Dizon said.
