World's only freshwater sardines(tawilis) found in Taal Lake is now an endangered species

This is one news we don’t want to tell….but we have to, because this is a “wake up call.”
The only freshwater sardines in the world, our very own Tawilis (sardinella tawilis) has just been listed as “endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
This was confirmed by a study that was conducted in February 28, 2017 and was published in 2018.

IUCN which is based in Switzerland said that the cathes of tawilis have dwindled significantly since 1998 and declined by about 49 percent over the past 10 years.
“Within Lake Taal, there are major threats to fish diversity and this species due to overexploitation, pollution and competition and/or predation with introduced fishes, resulting in continuing declines in habitat quality and number of mature individuals,” the IUCN said.
IUCN have also identified other factors that caused the decline of the tawilis population, which includes “illegal use of active fishing gears such as motorized push net and ring net, proliferation of fish cages and deterioration of water quality.”
Dr. Mudjekeewis Santos of the National Academy of Science and Technology said the assessment of tawilis as endangered was a “wake-up call.”

The IUCN has urged local government agencies to be more pro active in the implementation of the different laws on lake management and conservation.
We should not allow tawilis to become critically endangered by doing nothing. There’s still hope, the management is doing something,” Santos said.
Tawilis is an endemic species in Taal Lake in Batangas, and is considered as the msodt dominant fish species caught in the area.
