Philippine military backs 'liquidation squad' against CPP-NPA

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte said last week that he intends to create an armed group that will hunt for the New People’s Army (NPA)’s sparrow unit.

“I will create my own Sparrow. Walang hanapin kundi mga istambay na mga tao, prospective NPAs at bibirahin sila (They will look mainly for idlers, prospective NPAs and kill them),” President Duterte said in a turnover ceremony of housing units to members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

“I will match their talent in assassinating people. They have firearms, for sure. That’s my plan,” Duterte added.

This statement of the President has been met with a lot of criticisms from the critics of the administration and pure delight to those who are fed up with the atrocities of the maoist group.

The Philippine military has agreed and backed the idea of the President to form a hit squad against the New People’s Army (NPA).

Brigadier General Edgard Arevalo, military spokesman, the would prefer the formed hit squad to be known under a different name and not as a “death squad”. They suggested "Team counter-NPA liquidation squad"

"If we are to be asked, we may call it by another name like Team Counter-NPA Liquidation Squad, and the like. But not Duterte Death Squad," he said. 

"We advocate a creation of teams comprised of elite soldiers to form that team, and we do not want its success to be referred to as the death squad of the President," he added.

Members of such squad if it will be formed will be from the elite soldiers so they can match well with the communist rebels' Special Partisan Unit, Brigadier General Edgard Arevalo said. 

Arevalo, clarifies that there is still no orders from Malacanang to proceed in forming the elite liquidation squad.
