Leni Robredo to AFP: Explain need for 3rd martial law extension in Mindanao

Vice President Maria Leonor “ Leni “Robredo is asking the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is there a need for the extension of martial law in Mindanao?

Robredo is asking the AFP when the latter recommended to President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to extend the effectivity of law in Mindanao which will only last up to December 31, 2018.

“Kailangang maging malinaw ang basehan bago pa man pag-debatehan. Mahirap din makipag-debate na hindi natin sa kanila hinihingi kung bakit ba kailangang palawigin,” Robredo said.

The Vice President was asked about this when somebody called in on her weekend radio show and asked her opinion on the matter.

The AFP has submitted a recommendation to President Duterte to extend martial law  to sustain “gains” in the region, among which is the improvement in law and order.

The last extension was predicated upon the full neutralization of local terrorists who sieged Marawi City last year.

The AFP and the Philippine National Police has been asked by the President to provide their assessments and from there make the appropriate recommendations if extension is needed.

Robredo, despite fully understanding that the AFP possession of confidential informations that can’t be disclosed to the public, she is demanding full transparency in the martial law extension in Mindanao.
“We know the AFP has a lot of information that is not available to us. But I think if it is requesting for an extension, it needs to be clear,” the Vice President said.
“Kapag nilinaw iyong dahilan, kailangan iyong track ng usapan: iyong extension ba ng Martial Law iyong makakasagot? Kasi kung ang sagot, hindi naman niya masasagot, so ano ang dahilan kung bakit kailangang i-extend?” Robredo added.

The martial law if granted by Congress will be third extension in Mindanao under the Duterte administration.
