PH's tourist arrivals for the first 8 months up by 8.5%

Things are looking up for the country.

Despite the six month’s closure of the beautiful island of Boracay, the country is faring well with respect to the tourist numbers that is visiting the country.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) has recently announced that there is an increase of 8.5% to 4.85 million tourist arrivals in the first eight months despite a decline in a number of top source markets.

Last August alone, DOT said foreign arrivals dropped 0.55% to 542,250.

Korea, keep its top ranking as the source of foreign tourist from the months of January to August despite registering a 0.91 percent decline in tourist arrivals translating to 1.06 million. All in all Korean tourist comprises 21.84 percent of the total tourist arrivals in the country.

China is a strong top 2 as a source market for foreign arrivals, its numbers soared and compensated for the decline in numbers of tourist from Korea and Taiwan (it registered a 2.59% decline in foreign arrivals), China has registered a 35.67 percent or 870,177 tourists, all in all, it accounts to 17.94 percent share of the total foreign arrivals in the country.

The United States follows China at number 3 with a posting of 8.2 percent increases in tourist arrivals or about 715,060 or 14.74 percent of the country’s total arrivals.

Japan and Australia will complete the top five source market for the Philippine tourism market.

Japan recorded 715,060 arrivals for the first eight months while Australia registered 431,779 tourist arrivals.
Other countries that made a significant tourist arrival numbers in the country are Canada, United Kingdom, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and India.

All this numbers have been met despite the world famous Boracay island being closed for foreign and local tourists for rehabilitation for six months, it was declared closed by order of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte last May after he called it a “cesspool”.

Yesterday Boracay island will have soft opening, in preparation for its formal opening and ending of the six months closure this coming October 26.

The country through its Department of Tourism aims to hit 7.4 million foreign arrivals for this year, this is in order to meet the projected numbers under the National Tourism Development Plan.
