Duterte threatens to withdraw all OFWs in Kuwait, if the Gulf state does not treat Filipinos as human beings with dignity

The President does not want to wait for the next Filipino victim.

Last week the Philippines Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has suspended the deployment of overseas Filipino workers to Kuwait over reports of the death of seven Filipino migrant workers.

Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Secretary Silvestre Bello III has directed the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) to stop processing overseas employment certificates (OECs) of Kuwait-bound workers. *

Pending a thorough investigation surrounding the death of the seven Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), the processing of the overseas employment certificates (OECs) will be on hold.

"Ako ang nag-order ng suspension muna ng processing ng OECs dahil pinaimbestiga ko yung nabanggit ng ating Pangulo na may kababayan tayong OFWs na namatay allegedly dahil sa maltreatment or abuse by the employers," Bello told ABS-CBN's Bandila.

"So habang iniimbestigahan natin, to find out the truth about the deaths of these OFWs, mas mabuti magpakasiguro tayo, I have to suspend the processing of the issuance of the OEC."

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte in his speech prior to his scheduled flight to India, has made a very stern threat to withdraw all Filipinos working in Kuwait if another Filipino worker dies.

Duterte takes note that the usual deaths of Filipinos in that Gulf state are raped and will end up committing suicide.

“One more incident about a woman, a Filipina being raped there, I’m going to stop, I’m going to ban,” Duterte said.

“I’m sorry. The Filipinos there, you can all go home. Tutal kapag umalis kayong mga Filipino they will also be having a hell of a time adjusting there.”

Duterte as president of the republic has stated that he does not want any quarrel or problems with Kuwait, but has made an appeal to the Gulf state and other neighboring arab nations, which plays host to large number of migrant workers ( whether skilled or domestic workers), to ensure that OFWs are treated humanely.     *

“Can I just ask you now to treat my countrymen as human beings with dignity? I don’t want to fight with you. We need your help,” Duterte said.

“Wala tayong ano d'yan. Nakakatulong kayo, pero if it ends up with misery, rape, and my countrymen committing suicide… We are poor, we may need your help but we will not do it at the expense of the dignity of the Filipino.”

“Kuwait has always been an ally. But please do something [about] it,” the President said.
